A few habits make Benefits a reliable fee-earn-back ledger instead of a guilt dashboard.

Keep card dates and fees honest

Set opened and renews dates when you add a card so anniversary and yearly windows line up
Override annual fee when you pay something other than the catalog default
Update nicknames so multi-card households stay readable

Chase Expiring soon first

Open the Expiring soon filter when you have limited time. Those windows have roughly 45 days or less left — fix those before browsing every Needs you row.

Always-count only what you actually use

Always count open months is powerful for credits you truly redeem every month. If usage is spotty, keep marking periods by hand so Claimed doesn’t drift above reality.

Valued lounges do move Claimed

Unrated Passive perks stay out of the fee bar until you price them. After Accept suggested, Set my value, or Punch, those dollars count toward Claimed — and the row stays under Active so you can keep managing it.

Enroll before you claim

Finish issuer enrollments (Priority Pass activation, Resy, airline-fee selection) before you trust the checklist. On Benefits, assignable rows use Accept suggested / Set my value / Punch — not a separate Set up CTA. Bilt Housing Rewards uses Set up under Needs you, then the tracked series lands under Used.

Hide vs write off with intention

Hide — “this was never mine / I’m not tracking it”
Won’t claim — “I could have used this and didn’t”

That distinction keeps fee decisions grounded: hiding junk noise is fine; writing off forgotten credits shows the real cost of neglect.

Pair with Wallet and redemptions

Wallet balances + Benefits credits together answer “what do I hold?” and “did the card pay for itself?”
Log redemptions so Yours / Smart valuation improves the dollar side of points grants
Use Adding cards Feedback when a catalog benefit looks wrong for everyone

Fee-earn-back mindset

Mid-cycle, behind on a high-fee card is normal if big annual credits haven’t posted yet. Revisit near renewal: Claimed + valued passives − fee is the cleanest story for keep vs downgrade.
